Wendy’s High School Athletes of the Week – Oct. 13, 2021
WIBW and Wendy’s are proud to celebrate the achievements of local high school athletes with our weekly Athletes of the Week honors.
Every week, we talk with two standout high school athletes in Topeka who have made their names known through their contributions on the field, the court or wherever they compete. 580 WIBW and 580 Sports Talk thank Wendy’s for their continued support of high school athletes in Topeka.
Our female athlete of the week is Avery Grunert, a sophomore golfer from Hayden. The Lady Wildcats earned a berth to state with their runner-up finish at regionals last week, paced by Avery’s score of 91, which was 6th overall individually. Avery spoke to us about her mindset with state on the horizon, what was clicking so well at regionals, her biggest strengths on the course and much more.

This week’s male athlete of the week is Tanner Newkirk, a senior cross country runner from Hayden. A reigning state champion in Class 4A from last season, Tanner also defended his city championship this past weekend. We spoke to Tanner this week about how his season has gone, returning from an injury last spring to compete at a high level again this year, his goals for the rest of the season and more.
