Week Eight 2019 Helmet Stickers

The final week of the 2019 regular season saw some superlative gridiron performances, and we honor the best of them with the final set of weekly helmet stickers of the year…

JOEY BLAKESLEY, Washburn Rural – The ‘Wild Bunch’ defense forced seven Seaman turnovers on the night, and Blakesley was responsible for three of them, all interceptions. The first of them occurred in the final minute of the first half and his long return set up a touchdown, and the third of them went back 66 yards for a score to punctuate Rural’s 35-10 win over Seaman.

COOPER CARLGREN, Washburn Rural – The junior signal-caller gets better every week. Carlgren threw for 104 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 44 yards and kept the Junior Blues offense churning throughout the night.

GEIVONNII WILLIAMS, Topeka High – Williams did everything but sell concessions at Hummer Sports Park in High’s 60-13 win over West. He caught a pair of passes for touchdowns from Da’Vonshai Harden. He took two punts back for touchdowns with returns of 73 and 60 yards. And he intercepted three passes on defense. That’s a special night.

KY THOMAS, Topeka High – One of the many measures of Thomas’s greatness is that I almost overlooked him for this week’s Helmet Stickers because he ‘only’ had one touchdown, a 19-yard run. But gaining 203 yards on 11 carries is an absolutely remarkable night, even in a short outing in a lopsided win. He’s made 200-plus yard performances so routine in his career, and they’re absolutely not that. A deep run in the playoffs should mean that Thomas gets to the 2,000 yard mark in rushing this year.

ANTONIO RUIZ, Shawnee Heights – The senior saved the best performance of his career for his senior night. Ruiz rushed for 126 yards and also caught two touchdown passes as the T-Birds beat Lansing 35-17.

OFFENSE, Hayden – Yeah, the whole offense. After being challenged following their first loss of the season last week, the Wildcats responded impressively with 43 first half points in a 50-6 rout of Wellsville. There were too many heroes to go around as Hayden distributed the ball among their talented group of backs, so the whole squad gets the award.
