State Cross Country Fields Set
Washburn Rural and Seaman each qualified their boys and girls teams for state, and Shawnee Heights, Topeka West and Hayden had individual qualifiers, in the regional cross country events held on Saturday.
In class 6A, Rural’s boys placed third and their girls were second in the regional held in Junction City. Seniors Caleb Wright (fifth) and Rylan Brown (ninth) led the way for the Junior Blues boys. Senior Jordan Tremblay (13th), sophomore Alexander Holmes (14th), and junior Arrik Wright (17th) rounded out their top five finishers. The Rural girls were paced by freshman Madeline Carter’s third place finish. Senior Christina Funk placed sixth, freshman Heidi Scheiber was 10th, sophomore Khloi Bird was 12th, and junior Keely Wagner finished 14th.
At Kanza Park in Topeka, Seaman’s girls placed second and their boys took third in their 5A regional. Freshman Bethany Druse led the Lady Vikes with an eighth place finish, and senior Suzanna Mosqueda (10th) also turned in a top-ten finish. The rest of Seaman’s top five were junior Megan Allacher (12th), senior Peyton Sannan (15th) and sophomore Emma Schultz (16th). Seaman’s boys got a sixth place finish from senior Taegan Loy, a 10th-place finish from senior Collin Underwood, and junior Titan Cina (15th), junior Jackson Horacek (20th) and sophomore Jace Moore (21st) rounding out their top five.
Shawnee Heights senior Kylie Phillips won the individual title in that race, and she heads to state along with teammate and fellow senior Makenna Orton, who placed seventh. Topeka West sophomore Anna Phelps also qualified for state with a 20th place finish. In the boys race, Shawnee Heights freshman Kory Sutton (4th), Topeka West freshman Lenny Njoroge (5th) and Topeka West senior Luke Phelps-Roper (13th) qualified.
Two Hayden runners are heading to state after their times in the 4A regional in El Dorado. Sophomore Tanner Newkirk won the individual boys title and junior Dawson Adams finished sixth in that race.
The state cross country meets will be held Saturday, November 2nd. 6A and 5A are at Rim Rock in Lawrence, and 4A is in Wamego.
