Junior Blues Boys Claim State Cross Country Championship
For the second time in school history, the Washburn Rural boys cross country team brought home a state championship. The Junior Blues topped the competition at Rim Rock Park in Lawrence to win the 6A state title for the first time since 1996. Their team score of 86 points, led by two top-ten finishes, was 13 points better than runners-up Olathe South.
Leading the way for Rural, as they so often did this season, were seniors Caleb Wright and Rylan Brown, who finished sixth and eighth, respectively. Senior Jordan Trembley (24th), junior Arrik White (28th), sophomore Alexander Holmes (51st), senior Wyatt Allen (68th), and sophomore Spencer Haddock (95th) also competed for the Junior Blues.
What a privilege to work with such an amazing group of kids! The long journey for these seniors ends here with a State Championship; just like they planned. Congrats @CalebWright379 @rylan_brown84 @jordantremblay5 @WyattRuns32 pic.twitter.com/BTmw3i5N8c

The Rural girls finished sixth as a team in the 6A meet, led by freshman Madeline Carter’s 27th-place finish.
Seaman’s girls and boys both placed eleventh as a team in the 5A meet, also in Lawrence. Senior Taegan Loy finished 15th to pace the Vikings’ boys effort, while freshman Bethany Druse was the top Lady Vike with a 24th-place finish. Shawnee Heights senior Kylie Phillips medaled in the girls race with a 14th-place finish, while Topeka West freshman Lenny Njoroge (12th) and Shawnee Heights freshman Kory Sutton (20th) took home medals from the boys race.
Two Hayden runners were medalists in the 4A meet at Wamego. Sophomore Tanner Newkirk finished second and junior Dawson Adams crossed the finish line 14th.
