This week’s Azura Credit Union Athletes of the Week are Washburn Rural senior football player Joey Blakesley and Washburn Rural freshman cross country runner Madeline Carter.
Blakesley intercepted three passes from his safety position as the Junior Blues wrapped up their regular season with a 35-10 win over Seaman. His first interception, late in the first half, set up a Rural touchdown, and his third pick went all the way back the other direction 66 yards for a score. On the season, Blakesley has five interceptions, two of which have been returned for touchdowns. We spoke to Joey about his three-INT night, the inspiration for his work ethic, how he prepares for games, and more.

Carter has been the leader of a strong, and young, Washburn Rural girls cross country squad throughout her debut season. She placed third in the 6A regional at Junction City and led the way to her team’s second place finish. The week prior, Carter came home in fourth at the Centennial League meet and helped the Lady Blues finish second as a team. We spoke to Madeline about having success as a freshman, her pre-race routine, why she enjoys running, and more.
