This week’s Azura Credit Union Athletes of the Week are Topeka High senior football player Ky Thomas and Shawnee Heights senior cross country runner Kylie Phillips.
Thomas became the city’s all-time regular season leading rusher in Friday night’s Trojan victory over Washburn Rural, passing Hayden’s Dan Davis on a 59-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. He finished the game with 271 yards rushing and now has an even 5,800 career yards on the ground, tallying 1,388 yards in six games this season. Thomas accumulated four touchdowns in the win Friday night, with three rushing and one receiving. He is committed to Minnesota to play football. We spoke to Ky about setting the record, his future college team’s 6-0 start, his advice for young football players, and more.

Phillips captured the city girls cross country individual championship last Saturday at Lake Shawnee, crossing the finish line first with a time of 20:24.8. It was her first career city championship after placing second in 2018. Phillips has posted race-best times for the T-Birds all season long. She qualified for state as a junior in cross country and in the 1600 and 3200 meter runs in track. We spoke to Kylie about why she loves to run, her pre-race routine, her city meet strategy, and more.
