This week’s Azura Credit Union Athletes of the Week are Washburn Rural junior basketball player Joe Berry and Hayden senior basketball player Sophia Purcell.
Berry has been the leading scorer for a Junior Blues team that has won four straight games and is 7-1 heading into tournament play this week at Basehor. He scored a team-high 18 points in a Friday night victory over Topeka West and had 21 in an overtime triumph over Highland Park last Monday night. Berry is a two-year letterwinner who started last season for the 6A state runners-up and earned First Team All-City honors. We spoke to Joe about his experience and leadership on his team, how he feels on a breakaway dunk, his great influences in basketball, and more.

Purcell’s play is a big part of the reason the Lady Wildcats have been on fire of late, winning five of their last six games. She had a team-high 20 points last Friday night as Hayden handed Seaman their first loss of the season. Purcell is a four-year letterwinner and starter for the Lady Wildcats. We spoke to Sophia about her team’s improvement, being a senior, her favorite basketball memories, and more.
