Alexander Steps Down as Trojan Football Head Coach

After 14 seasons at Topeka High, including a 2019 campaign that ranks as the most successful in the history of their program, Trojan head football coach Walt Alexander has stepped down.

Alexander went 2-7 in his first season at Topeka High back in 2006 but soon commenced to winning at a higher rate than any other Trojan coach ever has. They reached the playoffs in 2007 and again in 2009, Alexander’s first winning season at the helm, and had just one losing season after that. Alexander guided nine Trojan teams to the 6A regionals, three to the sectionals, and the 2019 team to sub-state, a first in school history. Their 10-2 finish in 2019 marked the first time any Trojan team had won double-digit games in a season. Topeka High also captured seven Centennial League championships in Alexander’s tenure.

The 57 year-old Alexander finishes with an 89-50 record at Topeka High, including a 7-10 mark in playoff games. He has compiled 173 wins as a head coach, which includes previous stops at Westmoreland, Elk Valley, Ness City, Hill City, Belleville, and Atchison County. And he doesn’t want his 30th season to have been his last in coaching.

“When you do what I’ve done for so long, and you love kids and you love your coaching staff, that’s something that you don’t just get rid of,” Alexander told WIBW. “I want to coach again, and I’m going to coach again, some place.”

Alexander spoke with Dan Lucero of WIBW about his decision to step down. Hear that interview here.
