580 Preps Recap – Games/Events of 9-14-19

The weekend saw action in cross country, with one of the city’s biggest events of the season, plus volleyball, soccer and tennis. Here’s what transpired…

CROSS COUNTRY

Seaman’s girls placed third and their boys tied for third with Topeka West for the top city team performances in Saturday’s Joe Schrag Invitational at the Stateland course. The Lady Vikes were led by exchange student Sidse Engsbro who placed third overall. The top female performer from the city was Shawnee Heights’ Kylie Phillips, who took second. Topeka West’s Anna Phelps was eighth. In the boys race the top male performer was Topeka West’s Lenny Njoroge, who came in third place. Teammate Luke Phelps-Roper was sixth. Kory Sutton of Shawnee Heights was fifth and Seaman’s Taegan Loy took ninth.

Washburn Rural competed at the Olathe North Twilight Classic, with the boys placing fifth and the girls seventh. Rylan Brown and Caleb Wright placed third and fourth for the Rural boys, respectively. Heidi Scheiber’s 23rd place finish was best among the Rural girls contingent.

Hayden’s boys placed fifth at the Wamego Invitational, with Tanner Newkirk placing second individually with a time of 16:43.5.

GIRLS TENNIS

Highland Park and Seaman took part in the Hiawatha Invitational, while Topeka West sent their team to the Salina Central Invitational.

BOYS SOCCER

On Friday, Seaman made a pair of first half goals stand up in a 2-0 win over Shawnee Heights. The Vikings are now 3-1 on the season.

Topeka West was routed by Emporia 11-1.

Topeka High dropped their final two matches in the Blue Valley West tournament, losing to Olathe South 5-0 on Friday and Wyandotte 4-0 on Saturday.

VOLLEYBALL

Hayden took on Eudora, Bonner Springs and Perry-Lecompton in pool play at the Baldwin Invitational. The ranked Lady Wildcats beat Perry-Lecompton 25-18, 25-16 as part of their pool. They would fall to Gardner-Edgerton in the semifinals and played Baldwin for third place.

Seaman took part in the Lansing tournament, where they lost to the hosts and Basehor-Linwood and defeated De Soto as part of the day’s action.
