580 Preps Recap – Games/Events of 12-21-19
BASKETBALL
Hayden earned a doubleheader sweep of Tonganoxie, with the Lady Wildcats scoring their first win of the season 43-30 and the Wildcat boys beat the Chieftains 59-47. The girls got 12 points from steady Sophia Purcell and hot shooting nights from Haley Karolevitz and McKenna Ellis. Vacarrio Triplett’s career-high 19 points were tops for the Hayden boys.
WRESTLING
Highland Park wrestled at the Ottawa duals, going 0-4 on the day. Javier Osorio was 2-1 in his matches at 120 pounds.
Seaman headed north to Britt, Iowa for the Al DeLeon Invitational. With the help of first place finishes from 132-pounder Cameron Smith, 152-pounder Landon Willard, and 160-pounder Dylan Williams, and second place performances from Zach Boucher (113) and Blake Smith (182), the Vikings won the event by two points over Central Springs (IA). Willard and Williams remain unbeaten on the season.
Shawnee Heights headed to Tonganoxie for the Randy Starcher Memorial Dual Tournament. The T-Birds went 5-0 on the day to win the event, defeating Louisburg, Frontenac, Coffeyville, Tonganoxie and Lansing. Tyler Lincoln and Brock Ferguson each went 3-0 on the day at 106 and 113, respectively.
Topeka High competed at the Emporia Winter Classic and placed eighth out of 15 teams. They were led by Matthew Cutshall’s second place finish at 152 pounds and Tre’ Thomas’s third place finish at 220.
Washburn Rural went down to Wichita for the Bishop Carroll Invitational and came home with the first-place honors, scoring 161.5 team points. Bowen Murray (132) and the still-unbeaten Gavin Carter (195) took first place at their respective weight classes, while 285-pounder David Huckstep and 120-pounder Caleb Douglas took second place.
