GIRLS GOLF
It was day one of the new two day State Golf Championship format, and cold and windy conditions made for high scores throughout the day. In class 6A at Carey Park in Hutchinson, Washburn Rural ended the day with a score of 377, in a fourth-place tie and 34 shots behind the leaders, Shawnee Mission East. Sophomore Kaitlyn Crough and senior Cassidy McMaster both shot 92 to lead the day’s efforts for Rural, and ended up 15 shots off the individual pace on a day where only one player broke 80. Junior Madelyn Luttjohan shot a 94, senior Kasey Hamilton a 99, and sophomore McKenna Merrick a 103. All five Rural players made the day one cut.
In 5A action at Emporia Municipal, Seaman’s team score of 400 has them in eighth place, 45 shots behind St. Thomas Aquinas in first. Freshman Lois Deeter’s 86 has her seven strokes behind the leader in a tie for sixth. Senior Molly Biggs shot a 93, while junior Molly McLaughlin, freshman Aspyn Burgardt and freshman Jade Thomas missed the cut. All three Shawnee Heights players missed the cut as well, as seniors Makaila Astle and Rebecca Donaldson and sophomore Olivia Morgan ended the day below the line.
At Hesston Golf Course, two-time defending 4A champions Hayden have their work cut out for them on day two, as they finished the first day with a team score of 411, good for sixth place, 34 shots back of Buhler. Junior Jensen Heideman had the best round of the day for her team, shooting a 97 and ending the day 17 shots behind the leader. Senior Haley Karolevitz ended up with a 99, sophomore Kate Roeder shot a 106, junior Emma Tepley turned in a 108 and freshman Ava Tepley shot a 112.
BOYS SOCCER
Topeka West fell to Manhattan 10-0 in a Centennial League road contest. In non-league action, Hayden defeated Piper 2-1 and Highland Park topped Ottawa 3-0.
VOLLEYBALL
Seaman, along with Olathe West, visited Bishop Miege for a triangular.
