CROSS COUNTRY
Washburn Rural’s boys took home a championship and the Rural girls paced the city pack at the Centennial League meet in Topeka. It was the second straight league title for the Junior Blues boys, who placed five runners in the top 11 and six in the top 13 on the day. Seniors Rylan Brown and Caleb Wright led the way, finishing third and fifth, respectively. Sophomore Alex Holmes (eighth) and senior Jordan Trembley (10th) joined their senior teammates in the top 10, and senior Wyatt Allen and junior Arrik White were 11th and 13th. Other city top-20 finishers were Hayden’s sophomore Tanner Newkirk (fourth) and junior Dawson Adams (14th); Seaman’s senior Taegan Loy (12th) and senior Colin Underwood (17th); and Topeka West’s freshman Lenny Njoroge (sixth) and senior Luke Phelps-Roper (18th). Seaman was third as a team behind Rural and second place Manhattan, with Topeka West fifth, Hayden sixth, and Topeka High seventh.
The girls race was dominated by Manhattan, but Rural’s second place finish included four top-10 and six top-20 runners. Freshman Madeline Carter led the Lady Blues with a fourth place finish, with senior Christina Funk right behind in fifth. Freshman Heidi Schieber and sophomore Khloi Bird were ninth and 10th, respectively. Senior Shannon Rezac placed 15th and senior Eve Schifman came home in 20th. Only two other city runners placed in the top 20, both from Seaman: freshman Bethany Druse (16th) and senior Suzanna Mosqueda (18th). Seaman placed fourth as a team, and Hayden was sixth.
VOLLEYBALL
Highland Park hosted a tournament that also included Topeka West. Results were not available.
Seaman, Shawnee Heights, and Washburn Rural headed down the Turnpike for the Emporia Invitational. Full results were not available. Washburn Rural did have wins over Emporia, Free State and Maize. Seaman beat Maize and Emporia but lost to Free State. Shawnee Heights had wins over Louisburg, Bishop Carroll, Lawrence and Bonner Springs and a loss to Free State.
Topeka High went west for a tournament in Abilene. Full results were not available, but the Lady Trojans suffered losses to Royal Valley and Buhler.
