The first events of the new year involved Washburn Rural athletics on Friday.

BASKETBALL

Rural’s boys and girls swept past Shawnee Mission North at the Washburn Rural Activity Center. The Lady Blues cruised to a 60-21 victory behind 24 points from Brooklyn DeLeye and 15 from Emma Krueger. Rural went on a 17-0 first quarter run to take the lead for good. In the boys game, the Junior Blues topped the Indians 62-50, with Joe Berry pouring in 19 points. Rural started the game on a 9-0 spurt and never trailed.

WRESTLING

Washburn Rural picked up a pair of wins in a triangular dual, with both of them impressive in different ways. The second-ranked team in Class 6A didn’t lose a match in a 74-0 win over Blue Valley and then defeated the #1 ranked team in 6A, Mill Valley, 42-25.
