Week Five 2019 Helmet Stickers
With Week Five of the high school football season in the books, it’s time to look back at the Friday night action and reward the city’s best efforts with helmet stickers…
–JACK KONRADE, Hayden – His 40-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter gave Hayden breathing space in their 13-6 win over Jeff West. The junior ended the night with 98 yards rushing on 13 carries.
–DIEGO CARR, Hayden – Carr stands in for the Hayden defense’s terrific effort from Friday night. It seemed like he was in the middle of every play, and he led the charge in stopping Jeff West’s two-point try in the second quarter that would have given them a lead and changed the complexion of the game.
–JOEY BLAKESLEY, Washburn Rural – Score on offense and defense, get a helmet sticker. Blakesley housed an interception return of 75 yards and also caught a one-yard pass for a score in Rural’s 49-7 rout of Topeka West.
–COOPER CARLGREN, Washburn Rural – The best performance of the junior signal-caller’s career saw him rush for three first-half touchdowns and throw for another, accounting for 166 yards of total offense in the Junior Blues’ first win of the season.
–BRAYDEN ZIRKLE, Shawnee Heights – The junior wideout visited the end zone twice, once on a catch-and-run of 61 yards and another on a stunning leaping grab on a Hail Mary that ended the first half. All told, Zirkle caught five passes for 150 yards as Heights beat Washington, 35-21.
–HUNTER WOHLER, Shawnee Heights – Not only is he developing a Culpepper-to-Moss-like connection with Zirkle, Wohler added to his three passing TDs with a 70-yard scoring run that effectively iced the game in the fourth quarter.
–KY THOMAS, Topeka High – Thomas was off to the races for his four touchdowns against Seaman, as those runs tallied 48, 54, 53, and 64 yards. All told, Thomas rushed for 262 yards on just 10 carries as the Trojans topped Seaman 56-7. He’s just 69 yards away from tying Hayden great Dan Davis for the all-time city rushing lead.
